Rowan Blackwell is an English fine artist whose work is defined by closeness: the direct gaze of a lion, the quiet authority of a leopard and the extraordinary physical presence of the natural world.
Created through patient fieldwork in Africa and other remote landscapes, Blackwell’s portraits remove the visual distance between viewer and subject. Working in colour and monochrome, he uses light, shadow and restrained composition to give every animal a sculptural presence. Each archival pigment print is issued in a clearly stated limited edition and may be presented with bespoke, museum-standard framing.
Career and exhibition highlights: Contact the gallery for the artist’s verified chronology, institutional presentations and current CV.
Rather than treating animals as part of a wider landscape, Blackwell presents them as individuals—revealing strength and vulnerability in equal measure.
