The artist
Richard Solstjärna is a Swedish contemporary artist who lives and works in Berlin. His practice brings together art, philosophy, spirituality and science through an expressive language of abstract painting. Drawing on abstract expressionism, Japanese calligraphy, Zen Buddhist aesthetics and ideas from quantum physics, he explores the invisible energies that shape reality and the mental, emotional, spiritual and physical dimensions of human experience.
Rather than describing a recognisable landscape, Solstjärna uses colour, gesture and the tension between marks to evoke forces in motion. His paintings on canvas and fine art paper invite viewers to consider nature as a living process, and abstraction as a means of engaging with experiences that cannot be reduced to a single image or explanation.
His work has been exhibited in Europe, New York and Dubai through solo and group exhibitions, art fairs and biennials. Selected solo presentations include Agora Gallery in New York and La Spadarina Gallery in Piacenza in 2004, Castell del Remei in Lleida in 2007, Sala Barna Gallery in Barcelona in 2008, the Church of S:t Johannes in Malmö in 2011, and KU64 in Berlin in 2013.
His selected group and fair history includes Galerie Sonia Monti in Paris, the Malmö Artist’s Book Biennial, and presentations at Thomson Gallery in Zug, Casa del Arte in Palma and Andakulova Gallery in Dubai. His 2026 programme includes Thomson Gallery, Zug, from 14 to 30 September, and Art Shopping at the Carrousel du Louvre in Paris from 23 to 25 October.
Solstjärna received a grant from the Swedish National Council for Cultural Affairs in 1995. His career includes international awards and honours, and his work is represented in international art dictionaries and art books. Corporate, gallery and private holdings include the Deloitte, EON and Swedbank collections in Malmö, the Philipponnat Collection in Champagne, and collections in Paris, Barcelona, Lleida, Munich and Berlin.
Richard Solstjärna is represented by Studio 54 Fine Art. The gallery presents a selection of his paintings through Artsy and Artnet and assists collectors with artwork information, availability, framing and international delivery.
Artist statement
“In my paintings the Energy and Forces which are immanent in Nature are visualized. Forces at work in maximum self-sufficiency. Primary, undiluted, full of tension. Never at ease, always in the moment. A pulse in rhythm and rhyme.”
