The artist

The canvas as a physical record of energy, rhythm and light.

Hallie Hart is an American artist whose multidisciplinary practice spans painting, film and literature.

Rooted in the legacy of New York Abstract Expressionism, her work carries the movement’s language into a contemporary practice centred on gesture, tactile surfaces and emotional narrative. Working directly with her hands rather than traditional brushes, Hart throws, stains, pours and manipulates paint across unprimed canvas, allowing gravity, movement and water to become active collaborators.

Her work has been exhibited internationally in New York, London, Monte Carlo, Tokyo, Singapore, Beirut, Brussels, Aspen and Miami, and is held in museum, institutional, corporate and private collections.

“I have never used a brush. I paint with my hands, on raw canvas, on the floor, with water as my closest collaborator—until the surface begins to behave like something alive.”
