The artist
Steven Lyon is a photographer, filmmaker, writer and visual artist whose work explores beauty, narrative and emotional truth.
Born and raised in Southern California, Lyon first gained international recognition after being discovered by Andy Warhol on Sunset Boulevard. After years in front of the camera, he moved behind it, spending more than twenty-five years in Paris developing a distinctive photographic language informed by film noir, European cinema and German Expressionism.
His photography has appeared internationally in Vogue, Vanity Fair and GQ and has been exhibited throughout Europe. Working from his downtown Los Angeles studio, Lyon remains closely connected to the craft and ritual of analogue photography.
The practice
Lyon’s photographs move between the intimacy of portraiture and the scale of the African savannah. Chiaroscuro, human emotion and the tactile character of film give each image its timeless presence.
“I see my art as a symphony of light and shadow.”
